Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE BOWMAN ROAD BRIDGES IMPROVEMENT PROJECT?
The project involves construction for two existing bridges on Bowman Road that cross the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks in North Auburn. Both bridges were determined to be in need of repair to ensure continued safe travel on Bowman Road.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS PROJECT?
Placer County’s Department of Public Works is responsible for the Bowman Road Bridges Improvement project.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PROJECT?
The existing bridges, which are both heavily utilized, were originally built in 1949 and after a recent assessment were determined to be in need of repair. Improvements of these existing bridges are now required in order to maintain a safe crossing over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.
WHAT WORK WILL BE DONE TO THE BRIDGES?
Once construction is complete, the bridges will include:
- Wider bridge decks
- Improved bridge piers, abutments and girders
- Widened sidewalks on the bridges and roadway approaches
- Additional roadway shoulder width for bicycles
- Structural improvements
WILL THE NEW BRIDGES INCLUDE A BICYCLE LANE?
As part of the project, additional sidewalk will be added to the south end of the project and connect to the existing sidewalk. New sidewalk will also be added between the bridges. Lastly, class 2 bicycle lanes will be created.
WHEN WILL CONSTRUCTION START AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
Construction will begin in spring 2019 and is expected to conclude in winter 2019/2020.
WHEN WILL THE WORK TAKE PLACE?
Construction will generally occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Night and/or weekend work may occur as necessary with County approval.
WILL THE ROAD BE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN DURING CONSTRUCTION?
Yes. Bowman Road will be completely closed with no through access during construction between Apple Lane and Old Airport Road. Interstate 80 will be utilized as a convenient parallel detour for vehicles. A shuttle service will be provided to transport cyclists and pedestrians from Apple Lane to Old Airport Road. For more information on the shuttle service, please visit the Corridor Map.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION AND HOW WILL THIS PROJECT IMPACT ME?
Access to local businesses and residences will remain open during construction. Local property owners and the traveling public may experience traffic delays and detours in order to construct the necessary improvements. You may also experience typical construction-related noise during scheduled working hours.
